Establishing a culture where different departments within an organisation work cohesively can be easier said than done.

Upsets, problems, issues, breakdowns and fall outs are just some of the outcomes driven by poor communication.

Transformational communication is an awesome skill in driving business performance and people motivation.

5 C your communication to get your message heard, understood and acted upon.

  • Clear
  • Considerate
  • Correct
  • Confident
  • Complimentary

Clear:

One of my favourite quotes is from famous composer Igor Stravinsky who said “To listen is an effort, and just to hear is no merit. A duck hears also.”

You need to operate on the basis of ‘I need the audience to listen and understand my message’.

With this in mind how do you ensure what you are saying cannot be misinterpreted in any way?

Plan what you are going to say, this will enable you to deliver your message with clarity – be clear and concise in your delivery.

Stick to the point and do not confuse/dilute your message with irrelevant information.

Considerate:

Speak to people in a way that you would like to be spoken to. Be

balanced, fair and honest in your words so that people respect you. Saying the right thing is not always the easiest option. If you are balanced in your communication, then even if an uncomfortable conversation is warranted, though your audience might not necessarily like hearing it they are more likely to listen and take your point on board.

Correct:

Do your homework! Look for evidence and examples your audience can relate to.   Be honest. If someone asks you a question and you do not know the answer, tell him or her and agree the best action to find the information! You are not Wikipedia.

Confident:

Keep calm and speak confidently. If your conversation is in front of a group remember that your body language speaks too! If you are feeling stressed due to the content of the message you need to deliver don't let your voice convey this. Role-play out loud. Pitch your message to a colleague or friend. Record it and play it back.

Complimentary:

Praise publically and reprimand privately. To acknowledge the efforts of the team around you or the results achieved costs nothing and could add significant value to the listening audience. Make it personal – in a good way!
